Film Knowledge: The ground you walk on
In academic work we take other people's previous work into consideration to prove we are on the right track, and to question or to further develop their achievements. It is about recognising that whatever you do in this field, you are part of a tradition. We examine all the different stages of filmmaking and how they help to determine the audience experience: scriptwriting, production, distribution, audience reaction (including technical, social, economical, political, psychological factors). Why are films made in a particular way? Why not in another way? Why are some scripts getting production finance and others are not? Which films are being seen? Why is who watching what films?
Even though assigned practical work is limited to a short trailer, your research thesis may include a practical element such as a feature film treatment, a 15-minute short film screenplay or a 5-minute short film, which become research because they challenge, explore or prove ideas about filmmaking.
