BA (Hons) Film Making: Practical hands-on training + Filmmaking in the mind
The first year of this two-year accelerated degree is the same as the Digital Film Making diploma. The second year (progression year) is taking students to a higher level of making films.
To improve our understanding of what works and what doesn't, we view all films, TV shows, DVDs and Quicktime movies as homework. Why do we laugh? Why are we scared? Why are we crying? Which techniques did the filmmakers use to achieve these effects? How can you apply their solutions to your problems when making your film?
Course content is academic, yet no "ivory tower" material. It is designed to help you to get a job and/or make a film: "The end goal is not knowledge, but action" (Aristotle).
You spend time in the classroom thinking, speaking and acting like a filmmaker: A previous student wrote to us after pitching a film project to a financier: "I found myself really utilising skills developed in your classes. All the presentations, talking and answering blunt questions have been invaluable." (Paul Reson, 2006 graduate)
Just because there is no camera in the classroom, and there are no colourful editing keyboard buttons to press, doesn't mean that it's not about making films. Filmmaking begins in the mind.
