Digital Film Making & the Visual Effects Industry
A large proportion of feature films, many TV productions and almost every commercial is using visual effects (VFX) to some extent. Even if they are not as obvious and central as in modern action movies such as Spider-Man, Star Wars, X-Men, Lord of the Rings etc., many productions include a couple of simple enhancements such as colour grading, 3D objects or a few shots involving blue/green screen. With the advent of faster computers and high quality software visual effects are today produced on digital, regardless if the production is fully digital or actually completely on film.
A lot of visual effects work is happening in the UK, particularly in London. Obviously, UK-based productions, such as the Harry Potter movies, are using these highly professional services. However, even movies perceived as "Hollywood" movies are partially or completely post-produced here. London has developed to be the international centre of visual effects and other post production. It is not widely known that "Superman Returns", "X-Men: the Last Stand", "Basic Instinct 2", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Ĉon Flux", "Troy", "The Da Vinci Code", "Batman Begins", "Alexander", "Alien vs Predator", "Kingdom of Heaven", to name a few, did all have visual effects produced by London companies. Please follow the links below for comprehensive lists of what major players in the UK visual effects business have been involved with.
Visual effects are an important part of our Digital Film Making course. We teach many important aspects such as match moving, stabilizing, chroma keying, compositing, rotoscoping etc. The UK visual effects industry is going strongly and is in need of trained talent.
