Ex-SAE student and live sound supremo goes back to class to inspire students…
Students at the SAE not only get the best education, but through their ongoing guest lectures they also learn how to cut it in the real world…
SAE colleges throughout the UK are well known and respected for the level of knowledge and real-world experience that goes into each and every diploma. But it’s not just about the academic side of learning – SAE also pride themselves on their rock-solid industry links. While the academic side of an SAE education is crucially important, it’s knowing how the knowledge learned fits into the real world that sets SAE students apart from the rest.
An ongoing source of inspiration to students are the regular talks that are given by guest lecturers, who are always working experts in their chosen fields and often ex-SAE students who have gone on to use their unparalleled education to garner top positions throughout the Audio, Film, Multimedia and Games industries.
The latest of these lectures was given recently by Pete Thomas, who captivated the assembled students with tales of his success in the live arena. In the short time since studying at SAE, Pete’s taken on Front Of House duties for the likes of The Police, Amy Winehouse, Ice-T, The Automatic and Jools Holland.
Over the course of two hours Pete talked at length about the role SAE played in equipping him for the rigours of a life in live sound, how to become a roadie, and – perhaps more crucially – how to stop being a roadie and get ahead in a live sound crew. But the overall message that Pete imparted to the students was the importance of digital in the live arena, and ultimately to learn from each and every experience while building upon the solid college-based foundation of their education at SAE.
SAE’s Industry Lectures are gaining popularity, not only as an insight into the real world that students will encounter when they’ve earned their diplomas, but also as a way to contextualise their education.
