Hollywood goes to the UK!

Students at SAE film school told: “You’ve never had it so good!”

Top film industry guru tells students at SAE London that most blockbuster films are actually produced in the UK – consequently they are well poised to take roles in the now thriving UK film industry…

Mitch Mitchell is Head Of Imaging at the world’s second biggest visual effects company, Cinesite, and has worked on numerous major movies, including Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, Troy and King Arthur. He recently gave a fascinating and informative lecture to students of SAE’s Digital Film Making Diploma and Degree courses at the company’s London college, and offered a positive insight into the UK film industry and employment opportunities within it.

After giving an overview of the major movies that Cinesite has been involved with (including Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, The Omen and The State Within) Mitch revealed that many international blockbusters are actually being shot and post-produced in the UK and that Hollywood is perhaps not the major centre of cinematic production that it once was or is, perhaps, currently perceived to be. But with so many high profile projects happening in the UK, Mitchell warned that this could result in a shortfall of expertise and employees able to take up posts within the now thriving UK film industry.

This is, of course, great news for students on SAE’s Digital Film and Interactive Entertainment courses, because their qualifications and experience within the film industry will undoubtedly hold them in good stead to take advantage of these extra opportunities as they complete their courses.

Mitch’s lecture also covered several technical, business and production topics, all imbued with his vast, high-level industry experience and presented in a very entertaining way. Another key topic that he covered was digital film and he gave an overview of what’s covered in his book Visual Effects For Film And Television (published by Focal Press). He concluded by stating that, in the long run, digital technology will prevail, again a very positive prediction for students on a course with such a depth of digital content.

The lecture was just one of many that students at SAE colleges get from high profile industry speakers. As well as the Digital Film Production course, SAE London also run Audio Engineering, Web/Multimedia Development and Game Development qualifications and regularly invite key industry figures to talk to students from all of these courses.
